Diffuse hair loss

Diffuse hair loss is an even reduction in hair density across the scalp without the formation of distinct bald patches.

It is most commonly noticed as increased shedding during washing or brushing, hair left on the pillow, or a gradual reduction in overall hair volume.

What causes diffuse hair loss?

Common causes include:

  • stress and emotional strain;
  • recent illness or infection;
  • iron, vitamin D or other nutrient deficiencies;
  • hormonal changes;
  • pregnancy and the postpartum period;
  • rapid weight loss and restrictive diets;
  • chronic fatigue and insufficient sleep.

Shedding often begins several weeks or months after the triggering event.

Can hair recover?

In many cases, yes. With diffuse hair loss, the follicles usually remain viable, so hair growth may gradually recover once the underlying cause is addressed and suitable care is introduced.

Maintaining a healthy scalp, following a balanced diet and identifying deficiencies promptly are important for preserving hair density and quality.

The earlier the cause of hair loss is identified, the greater the likelihood of successful recovery.
